And they\u2019re strictly regulated by the government to ensure they have the funds to cover the risk they take on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Now, being an insurance agent means you\u2019re licensed to sell and service policies created by insurance carriers. And if you\u2019re appointed with an insurance company, it means you\u2019re authorized to sell their insurance products to your customers in states where you\u2019re licensed.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An appointment is basically a contract between you and the carrier. It lays out which policies you can sell and the amount the carrier will pay you for each policy you sell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"look-for\">What to look for in a carrier selling commercial insurance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Before you apply for an insurance carrier appointment, do your research. If you\u2019re successful, you\u2019ll be in a working relationship with them. They\u2019ll do their due diligence on you and your agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it works both ways. It\u2019ll give you an idea of the company\u2019s financial stability. But don\u2019t panic if they don\u2019t have one. They might be a subsidiary of a larger firm. Or had a name change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also want to find out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How much an appointment will cost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How long the contract will be<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If they expect you to meet strict sales quotas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What their customer service is like \u2013 for example, how\u2019s their claims handling?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-appointed\">How do you get appointed with an insurance carrier?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Every insurance carrier is different. But as most are looking for a long-term, profitable relationship, they typically look for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u2022 Several years\u2019 experience in the business<br>\u2022 A proven sales track record showing growth and profit<br>\u2022 An existing book of business<br>\u2022 A solid business plan with a marketing strategy showing you\u2019re committed to growth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>They\u2019ll look at your appearance, to make sure you\u2019re a professional-looking operation. And they might also be interested in the technology and platforms you use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Your business\u2019s location is important too. They\u2019ll want to be sure you have access to the kind of customers they want. Which is why they\u2019ll also ask how many other insurance carriers you represent. So there\u2019s no risk of duplicating markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tips\">Getting appointed: tips for new insurance agents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>If you\u2019re a newly licensed agent, you won\u2019t have a proven track record. But there are things you can do to get that appointment on your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do your research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Research the carrier and the products they offer thoroughly. Check how often they take on new agencies. Read their online reviews and make sure their products fit with your business plans. If they do, tell the carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Review their requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Review what the carrier requires and make sure you qualify before applying. They may well do background checks. And ask for proof you have the relevant licenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stand out from the pack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Show the carrier you\u2019re different. It shows you have presence in the industry and that you mean business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start networking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Keep an eye out for carrier reps at any conventions or training sessions. You could also try looking on LinkedIn for people you could approach for commercial appointments. And if you\u2019ve already spoken to carrier reps, ask them to steer you in the direction of the individuals responsible for agency appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Be friendly, not pushy. You won\u2019t be the only agent contacting them, hoping to get an appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do the leg-work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Most major insurance carriers tend to look for captive (exclusive) agents rather than independent ones.
