Without it, a minor slip-up could cause a major mess. It could even clean you out completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, do house cleaners need insurance? What insurance is required for house cleaners? Why? And what does it cover?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What insurance policies do house cleaners need?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re looking for maids\u2019 insurance or housekeepers\u2019 insurance, most residential cleaners typically need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancebee.com\/general-liability-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General liability insurance<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tools and equipment insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancebee.com\/workers-compensation-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Workers\u2019 compensation insurance<\/a> (if you employ anyone).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, depending on the way you run your business, you might also want to add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancebee.com\/cyber-liability-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cyber insurance<\/a> to your house cleaning insurance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>General liability insurance for house cleaners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your line of work means you\u2019re in and out of peoples\u2019 homes, handling their prized (and sometimes pricey) possessions. And however careful you are, accidents happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it\u2019s no surprise that it\u2019s common to be hit by an insurance claim when house cleaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we\u2019re not just talking about breakages and damage caused by spills and drips here. Because wet floors are unavoidable in the residential cleaning industry, we\u2019re talking about the risk of slips, trips, and falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the average slip and fall settlement is between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brownandcrouppen.com\/blog\/average-slip-and-fall-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$10,000 and $50,000<\/a>, but they can cost a lot more. In fact, a recent slip and fall claim would have cost one of our customers over $105,000 to settle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, he had a general liability policy, which took care of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, there are ways to reduce the risk of claims like these. And we\u2019ve created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancebee.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cleaners-fact-sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a handy factsheet you can download<\/a> to help you do this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the best protection for your business and your bank balance is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancebee.com\/general-liability-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">general liability insurance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does cleaners\u2019 general liability insurance cover?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>General liability insurance for residential cleaning businesses can cover the cost of legal claims for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Property damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bodily injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal injury (slander or libel). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a client slips and falls on your freshly mopped floor, or trips over your vacuum cord and breaks a leg. Without general liability insurance, you\u2019d have to pay their medical bills. And legal costs, if they sue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or you knock a client\u2019s antique vase off a side table onto the floor and it shatters. Without general liability insurance you\u2019ll have to pay to replace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what if a particularly tricky client overhears one of your employees saying something not-so-nice about them? You could be sued for personal injury. Without insurance, you\u2019ll have to pay legal costs and damages, too, if the case doesn\u2019t go your way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone makes a claim against you for injury to themselves or their property, general liability insurance can pay medical bills, repairs or replacement costs, and legal fees, regardless of fault. But if it turns out you\u2019re liable, it can pay compensation too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tools and equipment insurance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>General liability insurance doesn\u2019t cover your own property. So if you take your own house cleaning equipment to jobs, you\u2019ll want to add tools and equipment insurance to your insurance package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It replaces your equipment if it\u2019s stolen or lost and means you don\u2019t have to delay or cancel jobs. It can even cover expensive equipment, like floor machines, rented equipment, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Workers\u2019 compensation insurance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have any employees, you can skip this one. But if you do \u2013 even if you only employ one person \u2013 you need workers\u2019 compensation insurance. It\u2019s required by law in most states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check your state\u2019s requirements, because penalties and fines can be severe. But a workers\u2019 comp policy is definitely worth having anyway, because it protects you from the cost of employees\u2019 workplace injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If one of your staff is hurt or falls ill as a result of working for you, workers\u2019 compensation insurance can pay their medical bills and replace missed wages. What\u2019s more, it can cover the legal costs and compensation if they sue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cyber insurance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you might think a house cleaning business doesn\u2019t need cyber insurance. But if you have a website and use email, you\u2019re a target for hackers. Especially, if you take bookings or payments online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One wrong click on an email is all it takes. Next thing you know you\u2019ve transferred money to fraudsters. Or they\u2019ve diverted your clients\u2019 payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cyber policy means you can click with confidence. If so, find out if it\u2019s covered on your employer\u2019s policy.
