So what&#8217;s the reason for this?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For enterprising chefs, it seems the relatively low start-up costs and high returns make food truck businesses an attractive alternative to brick-and-mortar restaurants. And thanks to social media, it\u2019s now easier to reach and engage with customers too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let\u2019s take a look at the key statistics for the US food truck industry in 2022. (Compared to 24,000 in 2020.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-much-does-it-cost-to-start-a-food-truck-business\">How much does it cost to start a food truck business?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodtrucknation.us\/wp-content\/themes\/food-truck-nation\/Food-Truck-Nation-Full-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food Truck Nation<\/a> estimates you can launch a food truck business pretty cheap &#8212; for around $50,000-$60,000. That\u2019s less than a third of what it costs to start a brick-and-mortar restaurant. A chunk of this money goes on getting permits, licenses and making sure you don\u2019t break rules and regulations. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodtruckoperator.com\/blogs\/startup-costs-by-the-numbers-food-trucks-versus-restaurants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Costs vary<\/a> from state to state depending on requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"which-state-has-the-most-food-trucks\">Which state has the most food trucks?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibisworld.com\/industry-statistics\/number-of-businesses\/food-trucks-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">California<\/a> has the highest number of food trucks, with 753 businesses operating in the state. It\u2019s followed by Texas, with 549 businesses, then Florida (502 businesses). And as these are three of the most visited states in the US, it seems tourism plays a key role keeping food trucks in business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"where-is-the-best-place-to-start-a-food-truck-business\">Where is the best place to start a food truck business?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Portland, Oregon, is the friendliest city in the US for food trucks, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodtrucknation.us\/wp-content\/themes\/food-truck-nation\/Food-Truck-Nation-Full-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food Truck Nation<\/a>&#8216;s index. Rankings are based on how easy it is to get the required permits and licenses. Other cities ranked in Food Truck Nation\u2019s top five are Denver, Orlando, Philadelphia and Indianapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most challenging city in which to open a food truck business is Boston. There, you\u2019ll have to go through three times as many procedures compared to, say, Denver. That&#8217;s why, Washington DC, San Francisco and Seattle also rank low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you&#8217;re thinking of opening a food truck business, look for popular tourist destinations. In Nevada, (the third most-visited US state) the market&#8217;s likely to be healthy.  You&#8217;ll also want to consider your market demographic.  For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/linchpinseo.com\/trends-food-truck-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">47% of millennials<\/a> have eaten from a food truck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-the-success-rate-of-food-trucks-in-the-us\">What is the success rate of food trucks in the US?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eposnow.com\/us\/resources\/what-is-the-average-food-truck-success-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around 40%<\/a> of food truck businesses are still in business three years after launch. A good business plan is vital at start-up. Your business could be doomed from the outset, but you won\u2019t know that unless you\u2019ve analysed your market and set yourself measurable goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your food truck business can also fail because of poor budgeting, inadequate marketing, or customer service that\u2019s not up to scratch. At the other end of the scale, trucks selling simpler food (think hot dogs) in less populated areas, make $5,000 to $16,000 a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/foodtruckempire.com\/news\/survey-income\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food Truck Empire surveyed 300, full-time food truck owners<\/a> to see if running a food truck was worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what they found out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Approximately 21% made over $200,000<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30% made $150,000-$199,999<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>34% made $100,000-$149,999<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just over 10% made $50,000-$99,999<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less than 4% made under $50,000.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-are-the-main-food-truck-industry-trends-in-2022\">What are the main food truck industry trends in 2022?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Customers are driving <a href=\"https:\/\/linchpinseo.com\/trends-food-truck-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trends<\/a> in food truck industry cuisine. The demand for environmentally friendly produce continues. What&#8217;s more, as well as locally or sustainably sourced items, consumers want vegan or plant-based menus. Gluten-free options are still desirable and there\u2019s a growing interest in alternatives to refined sugar too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Covid-19 pandemic, savvy food truck businesses made as much as 50% of their revenue from order-ahead sales. However, general liability insurance is a must-have, wherever you\u2019re based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"general-liability-insurance-covers-food-truck-owners-for\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancebee.com\/general-liability-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General liability insurance<\/a> covers food truck owners for claims of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bodily injury<\/strong> \u2013 you accidentally spill hot coffee, scalding a customer. Your policy can pay for medical bills, legal fees and compensation if the case goes to court<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Property damage<\/strong> \u2013 a grease fire in your food truck spreads, causing damage to a neighboring property.
