And the good news is the pandemic doesn&#8217;t seem to have hampered it much. In fact, it&#8217;s grown an impressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketresearch.com\/Kentley-Insights-v4035\/Landscaping-Services-Research-Updated-COVID-34619957\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8.3% per year on average between 2020 and 2023<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibisworld.com\/industry-statistics\/number-of-businesses\/landscaping-services-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">641,782 landscaping businesses in the US<\/a>, an increase of 3% since 2022. And while there may be some big players in the industry, there are no companies with more than a 5% market share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The states with the highest number of landscaping companies are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Florida (61,751)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>California (52,682)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New York (45,095)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Landscaping services<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giecdn.blob.core.windows.net\/fileuploads\/document\/2023\/10\/10\/2024_soi_full_report_rfs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The services most commonly offered by landscaping professionals<\/a> in the US are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lawn care\/chemical application (offered by 86% of professionals)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Landscape maintenance (82%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Landscape design\/construction (71%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trees and ornamental (66%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irrigation (51%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While additional landscaping services (offered by 90% of professionals) include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spring and fall clean-up (75%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seasonal color installation (55%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snow and ice management (46%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vegetation management (22%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perimeter pest control (22%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mosquito control (22%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holiday lighting (20%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>US household spending behavior<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the pandemic, more and more people have taken up gardening. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardenresearch.com\/view\/national-gardening-survey-2023-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 National Gardening Survey<\/a>, 80% of US households participate in gardening and lawn care activities \u2013 the highest in five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average spending on lawn care and gardening activities per household has also risen, from $542 in 2021 to $616 in 2022 (an increase of $74). Small wonder, then, that 59% of landscaping companies\u2019 gross revenue came from working on single-family residential properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Younger gardeners (particularly those in the 18-34 and 35-44 age groups) are most likely to spend more on tidying up their outdoor spaces. On average, the largest amount of money is spent on hardscaping, then installation and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking towards the future, over one-third of households predicted their spending on lawn care and gardening activities would go up in 2023. Though this would likely mean investing more in food gardening and less on flowers and lawn care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Landscaping industry employment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The US landscaping industry employs almost 1.3m people, while the average landscaping business in the US has 2 employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the latest industry statistics predict that the overall employment of landscaping and grounds-keeping workers will grow 10% from 2019 to 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This growth will be driven, in part, by the increase in ageing Americans. As baby boomers (the generation born between 1946 to 1964) approach their 60s and 70s, many are turning to landscape contractors to do the maintenance jobs they can no longer manage themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Landscapers earn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/oes\/current\/oes373011.htm#nat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an average yearly salary of $39,790<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wages typically start from around $29,070 for a starting level landscaper and go up to approx $51,290 for a top-level landscaper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Massachusetts, the District of Columbia, and Washington have the highest average salaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Landscaping industry challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Statistics indicate the top challenges for landscaping companies include economic uncertainty, high fuel prices, seasonality, and industry-wide labor shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current labor market causes some concern, with 59% of those surveyed for the <a href=\"https:\/\/golmn.com\/blog\/landscape-business-trends\/#:~:text=Landscaping%20businesses%20are%20preparing%20for%20the%202024%20season,which%20strategies%20can%20help%20attract%20and%20retain%20employees.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">State of the Landscape Labor Market Report<\/a> saying that the labor market is worse than before the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, 84% of polled landscaping business owners said finding and keeping labor was a major challenge.
